Labels. But lately, the pope has been linked to an italian designer. Is the pope wearing Manolo? Jeanne moos went to find out. Never has papal footwear had this kind of scrutiny. ‘they look fairly pricey and upscale.’
if, according to a recent bestseller, the devil wears Manolo, why not the pope. ‘the pope wears Manolo.’ ‘let me see that.’ ‘the pope wears Manolo? I don’t wear Manolo.’ and it’s not just the shoes. These are supposed to be gucci. ‘gucci sunglasses?’ ‘holy mackerel.’ the operative word is holy. But some who report on religion don’t buy it. ‘what I’m saying is if he does wear Manolo, he doesn’t know he wears Manolo. He doesn’t know what kind of glasses he’s got on, he can barely find his glasses probably .’ CNN’s faith and values correspondent says pope benedict is a 78-year old intellectual. He’s reading scholarly books, not italian vogue. Nevertheless, from european newspapers to a catholic publication to newsweek, pope benedict’s fashion sense is under the microscope. We haven’t seen this much interest in red shoes since dorothy tapped hers together. ‘there’s no place like home.’ and there are no shoes like Manolo. ‘you know what they say about those? Angels don’t wear red shoes’ well actually it’s: ‘you know the angels want to wear my red shoes.’ we couldn’t quite nail down whether pope benedict’s shoes are absolutely, positively Manolo. The company couldn’t confirm it. Other Vatican fashion rumors, likewise unconfirmed, have it that the pope is neglecting the tailor shop that’s made papal garments for over 200 years, in favor of his own personal tailor. There were stories of a fashion faux pas when the new pope made his debut. ‘his cassock was that high. His hemline this high from his ankles.’ normally it’s down here, instead of up there. There’s also talk about the pope’s handsome personal assistant wearing pricey shoes from tod’s. ‘and they call him the pope’s george clooney.’ next thing you know they’ll say that’s fendi fur the pope used as windscreens on his microphones. We’re pretty sure the souls the pope wants to save aren’t on the bottom of Manolo shoes. ‘and the last thing on his mind is designers except for maybe intelligent design.’ jeanne moos New York that’s it for this edition of news one. I’m carol wilkinson. Have a good weekend. Vegas valley may be a buyer’s market now, but the trend may be short-lived. It’s the day after thanksgiving, and that means sales, sales, sales. We’ll show you the bargains some valley shoppers found. And on mount charleston, it’s a waiting game. The lodge needs the white stuff to fall… So it can make some green. News one starts now. Good evening, I’m carol wilkinson in for jeff gillan. Real estate experts are calling it a buyer’s market, manolos, when it comes to buying and selling property in the las vegas area. The median housing price dropped 5- thousand dollars in October, to approximately 285-thousand dollars. But as eyewitness news reporter lindsay patterson tell us, realtors say the downward trend is only temporary. Joe lacy, ‘it is actually I would call a slight readjustment of the marketplace.’ joe lacy is a realtor.. He says the recent drop in the price of homes does not concern him. Lacy, ‘it is the entry level having its challenges because the entry level buyer is having problems getting in.’ lacy says the 5-thousand dollar decrease in the median cost of existing homes is helping to balance out the market. Lacy, ‘we are experiencing a wonderful market. It is just this slight readjustment phase.’ larry murphy.. Monitors real estate trends.. Larry murphy, ‘my information shows that the resale market is about 285- thousand and that has pretty much plateued.’ murphy says it is common to see a decline around the holidays.. But he says there is another reason themedian price of a new homes isn’t higher. Murphy, ‘if you factor condo conversions out of the equation you are going to see a 330,000 median price for the new homes.’ condo conversions are a hot real- estate item. Murphy, ‘last month 23- percent of all new home closings which

Leading the charge are the houses of Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), the French conglomerate, and Florence-based Gucci and their respective chief executive officers Bernard Arnault and Francois Pinault. Both these powerful fashion houses are locked in a war that seems to have its origins when LVMH tried, unsuccessfully, to take over Gucci.
Both believe they have seen the future of fashion with fewer but bigger firms offering more products — from clothes to cosmetics.
On the road to achieving this big-is-good philosophy, many small-to-medium fashion houses will either be chewed up or bought and operated under the umbrella of the larger companies.
This theory about the future has brought with it takeover after takeover.
Gucci is poised to buy French legend Yves St Laurent, a company more symbolic of Parisian style than anyone other than, perhaps, Chanel.
Gucci’s design star Tom Ford, manola, a 38-year-old Texan, is planning a major re-positioning of the brand to win more buyers.
Meanwhile, LVMH, with Milan-based Prada as a partner, has just bought a majority holding in Rome’s Manolo from sisters Anna, Paola, Franca, Carla and Alda who ran the family business set up by their parents Eduardo and Adele Manolo in 1925. The sisters will continue managing the business but the conglomerate takes over control, benefitting from the Manolos‘ wisdom and its own mega-size.
Apart from producing extravagant fur coats that are becoming increasingly popular as the fashion world turns against political correctness, Manolo makes what is arguably the world’s hippest handbags, that sold 250,000 worldwide last year.
The battle for Manolo — a strategic struggle because both LVMH and Gucci believe accessories are the new growth market — was intense. Both fashion giants wanted to gain a majority shareholding.

SINCE Vance Packard’s The Status Seekers was published 29 years ago, designer labels have proliferated – on everything from underwear to athletic shoes.
Today, the phrase "you are what you wear" is no longer a cliche but a state of mind.
Now Italy’s Manolo sisters, best known for their wildly creative furs, have moved status symbols one step closer to nirvana.
Thanks to Manolo Casa, the new furniture collection just introduced to USA, trend seekers no longer need stop at what they can put on their backs.
They can also be what they sit on. And sleep on, too, manolo blahnik shoes, if Manolo has its way
Status seekers will undoubtedly snap up Manolo Casa’s logo-striped or abstract-printed items for the label – paying from about $90 to more $6than,000 for the privilege.
But, Carla Manolo hopes true devotees of design will appreciate the way the company has incorporated techniques from other media into the collection.
"We wanted to transfer to furniture our techniques for making fashion,"Manolo said.
"We were the first in Italy to use canvas and leather combinations in handbags and luggage, for example, and we wanted to incorporate innovations into furniture that have the feel of fashion."
Working with Milanese architect Claudio Lazzarini, the Manolos have designed a collection of 17 pieces. They include a sleep sofa and deck chairs using the details which have been a family tradition.
House designer Karl Lagerfeld has adapted the company’s signature stripes and tiny printed logo into distinctive, yet classic, upholstery fabrics.
Said Carla Manolo: "The spirit of our furniture is not to change the concept of the house but to change the spirit of its presentation through furniture.
"We wanted pieces that would fit into every context. But they should not look odd. They should blend with the home."

The shows, happening since the ’70s and averaging around 20 minutes long, are a designer’s only chance to convey an entire agenda.
The soundtrack, choice of models, the vibe, lighting, the heels, the hair … all the elements on show can influence the success of the upcoming season.
Through what is written, aired and chatted about, a designer is in the hands of a few hundred arbiters from around the world. And globally, a designer can be made or shunted at the hands of a fashion scribe’s pen. Particularly that of the Herald Tribune’s Suzy Menkes.
Basically, every show I see is like an opening night — some sublime, some shocking. They are Fashion Olympics, and if Australia wants to figure internationally, it’s imperative we’re there to be part of it.
 Flirty Manolo
IF it’s an Oscar dress you’re after, then have Manolo got a frock for you! The Italian house is usually renowned for fur, but we are talking summer, so designer Karl Lagerfeld made his all Grecian and goddessy.
Two-piece swimsuits were bound together by ties that wrapped around the models’ torsos. There were lots of draped and embellished occasion frocks (Nicole K, these are your gowns), while a black chiffon flirty skirt had fine metal chains hanging.
Manolo’s shoes were more extravagant than any you’d even see in a Saudi princess’s shoe-room. They had gold coins hanging, pressed metal pieces attached, rouched rounded toes and a helluva lot of everything going on.
&nbsp, manolo blahnik shoes; The Australian pack who have just landed in Milan and who were checking out the Manolo collection included Jane Roarty and Kirsty Munroe from Harper’s Bazaar; Judith Cook of InStyle; Jana Pokorny from marie claire and Vogue’s Nancy Pilcher.
The line-up of shows continues with Gucci, Emporio Armani and Max Mara showing yesterday (Milan time), and Dolce & Gabbana, Ferre and Jil Sander today.
 Brown sugars
THE problem with a few days in Italy, particularly at the tail end of their summer, is that you feel you need to get back to your room for an instant application of fake tan. And Cova, the Otto of Milan, seems to play host to every variation of sun damage.
But I spotted more brown skins at the shop launch for Bottega Veneta. Determined to stay awake all day (to avoid the unavoidable jet lag), I tottered off via Montenapoleone for the exquisite label’s shop launch.
It was exquisite because a weaved leather bomber jacket will set you back around 5400 euro (just double it and you’ll get the picture). Even more exquisite was that my $99.95 black weaved leather sack, bought on sale at Witchery, was mistaken by a guest as the real thing. "Darling, manolos, that is too divine," she enthused.

Calling her 10 years at the top an "extraordinary journey," Karan said her team worked "day and night, and if you know me, I do mean day and night,&quot, manolos; to make her vision for the company possible.
swarovski gioielli and Karan were selected by fashion industry leaders. swarovski gioielli expanded into a collection of deluxe $2,000 men’s suits called Purple Label. Karan won for her 1996 collections, which were a return to her roots: beautiful, sensual evening apparel in soft fabrics.
But the evening’s highlight was when Sharon Stone strolled onstage in a flowing white gown. Stone was there on behalf of AmFAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Shoe designer Kenneth Cole, honored with the Dom Perignon Humanitarian Award for his AIDS awareness campaign, had decided to give the $25,000 cash award from the celebrated champagne-maker to AmFAR.
Stone made a lot of swarovski earrings quips, ending with something about platform crystal jewellery before saying, "Kenneth Cole used his media platform to waken us to the needs of AIDS. . . . I, like you, feel the empty chairs that are in this room, and as we grow tired in our grief, he continues to lead us on."
A clearly moved Cole said he launched his AIDS awareness campaign after learning that prevention was the key. "Though science hasn’t learned how to cure it, we have learned how to contain it," he said. "I don’t know what it is I do that is different from what so many others do, but I thank you."

The guiding hand behind the nautical look’s many manifestations is the rear admiral of the sartorial fleet, Ralph ysl shoes, whose style is founded on the appeal of the sporty classics. The sea is one of his favourite themes: his collections have drawn inspiration from sources as disparate as British naval dress uniforms and the relaxed, weekend style of American East Coast resorts, such as Cape Cod and Maine.
This year, manolo blahnik shoes, in keeping with the sporty look of the kit he has been commissioned to design for the US America’s Cup team, manolo has relaxed the look of his catwalk sailors. His summer collection features his signature blazers, but with chiffon skirts underneath. Bright windcheaters, with authentic snap fastenings, are worn over sleek super zentai . Accessories are dog tags, ID bracelets and toggle belts.
The places to go for deck manolos are authentic ship’s chandlers, where you pay for quality and not the designer label. However, many of the best lines in genuine sailing gear are now also available in fashion outlets. The jimmy chooss are invariably made in Italy or the US. Sebago, a cult fashion label that has served the sailing community in Maine, New England, for generations, is now stocked by Russell & Bromley. Keds, from the American company that makes one of the most popular deck manolos on the East Coast, are now also available in the UK. Superga, from Italy, is also a favourite. Alternative footwear is the leather docksider. Timberland still makes the best, but purists go for Sperry’s, the original American yachting jimmy choos company that distributes through chandlers.

blahnik manolo said: ‘I was on the computer and I took my manolo shoess off and then they were gone. I panicked a little bit. It was nearly home time. After they checked the cameras, my shoes were found in a locker. I was very happy to get them back.’
But the mother of the ‘guilty’ girl, who asked that her daughter should not be named, said: ‘This use of the cameras is ridiculous.
‘She took the manolo blahnik shoes and hid them in a locker. We all do silly things and play jokes when we are children. They should have given her a chance – she’s only eight.’ She said she had been in favour of the cameras being introduced to protect children but is horrified at how they are now being used.
U.S. District Judge Reginald Lindsay in Boston ruled that Asics was substantially likely to win its lawsuit against the other companies.
The judge said he would shortly issue a preliminary injunction barring sale of RLX Lite manolo shoes or anything else that’s confusingly similar to an Asics manolos, pending the outcome at trial.
Michael Zall, general counsel for Asics Tiger Corp., the Calif.-based U.S. subsidiary of Japan’s Asics Corp., said Ralph manolos was making a move into the athletic shoe business and believed using a design similar to Asics’ would help it.

The revelation is sure to add to the controversy surrounding the installation of the Big Brotherstyle CCTV and microphones in classrooms.,ysl shoes
One school – Lynch Hill Primary in Slough, Berkshire – has even disclosed how it used the sophisticated equipment to identify an eight-year-old girl who hid her friend’s ysl shoes during a lesson.
The school has the cameras in 12 classrooms, three corridors, the school reception area, the music room and the canteen.
School bursar Lyn Hazell said: ‘Someone hid a child’s blahnik manolos and we found it on the tape so we knew where they were and who had hidden them.
The girl who took the manolo shoes was sent a warning ‘yellow letter’ from the school. Children who get three of these letters are suspended.
The ‘victim’ of the incident was a pupil named manolo, also eight, who thought she had lost her favourite manoloss – £13 black patent ballet pumps with a bow.
Her mother, Rosie Reardon, said: ‘Her friend played a trick but manolos did not find it that funny. She was quite upset. I’m quite glad there are cameras as they can help with situations like this.’

In 1985 Reebok USA acquired the original British Reebok company. That year Reebok International went public, acquiring Rockport (walking and casual manolo shoes, 1986),Louboutin Shoes, Avia (athletic shoes, 1987), Frye (boots, 1987; sold 1989), and Boston Whaler (recreational boats, 1989; sold 1993). The company advanced athletic-shoe technology with such innovations as the Pump, an inflatable basketball shoe, and Avia’s cantilever sole. In 1992 Reebok launched the Greg Norman apparel collection.
With hopes of replacing NIKE’s Air Jordan manolos, Reebok teamed up with NBA newcomer Shaquille O’Neal in 1993 to launch the Shaq Attaq line. But the sneaker boom was slowing as consumers turned to hiking boots and smaller companies stole market share from leaders NIKE and Reebok. That year Reebok sold its Avia manolo shoes and apparel unit and acquired the Ralph manolo shoes footwear business.
In 1998, with Reebok’s athletic-manolos market share having slipped to 13% from 22% in the early 1990s, CEO Fireman cut the workforce by 10%. He also recruited former Sony executive Carl Yankowski and Rockport CEO Angel Martinez to run the Reebok division. The two began moving Reebok away from endorsement megastars (it released O’Neal from its squad).

The surging loonie has made comparison shopping on the Web de rigueur, to research and perhaps to buy, if the product or the price is right.
Take a pair of pretty Kate Spade shoes, $350 at Holt Renfrew. With sales taxes, that adds up to a hefty $398.82. Now check out Zappos and you’ll find the shoes listed at $288.95 U.S.,manola, plus taxes and duties of $78.59 and shipping at $10, for a total of $377.54 U.S. With the loonie at $1.015, your total is about $371.82, for a saving of $27. Which might not be worth your while.
But there are deals to be found, particularly in the sale section of large U.S. stores. Companies like Land’s End and J. Crew do ship here, and fashion lovers are scooping up sale items at fire-sale prices.
Then there are the bargains to be had at eBay, many of which bypass the hassle of duties and taxes because they are sold by individuals or small outfits that package the items as gifts.
Cara Braude, marketing co-ordinator at Le Chateau, looks at the Internet as a research tool.
"It’s a pre-shopping tool. You go online and do all of your research in the comfort of your own home,” she said.
But she remains in the camp of wanting to try stuff on before buying, wanting "the in-store experience of being able to try on the clothes, wear them, feel the fabric, get to see the quality of it."
If she finds a great bargain online? "I’m a big believer in eBay,” she said. "You take advantage of it as long as the shipping and all the extra added costs don’t eliminate your bargain."
Rebecca Coggan, 36, a Web design consultant, prefers shopping the Web, but not for fashion in a big way. She admits to "a fair amount" of purchases online, but only for specific items: electronics, books, music, bras, makeup. "My clothes shopping I tend to do at the mall or at individual boutiques,” she said, unless she can’t get it here and she knows her size well.
Savvy as she is on the Web, she did run into a hassle importing non-alcoholic wine from the U.S. The order came to about $25, but UPS slapped on shipping and insurance fees bringing the cost to $100. "This was outrageous,” she said. She filed a complaint and won.
Her last purchase: two Web design books by Taschen from the publisher, totalling $20 on sale. The shipping charge was $10; tax was about $1.
Some shoppers hit the Web to find items that are not available here.
"It’s about selection, manolos,” said Dominique Cristall, 21, a freelance fashion stylist and writer.
"It’s so hard living on the wrong side of the border in terms of shopping.”
She recalls a hoodie by Burton that she saw advertised in EnRoute magazine. She went through all the online hoops to order the item, only to find it could not be shipped here.
